2.3 Surfaces. Both types of stakes shall be smooth sawn or planed on not less than two sides.
Type I – Location stakes shall be surfaced on the two wide faces.
Type II – Hub stakes shall be surfaced on two opposite faces.
2.4 Pointed end.
Type I – Location stakes shall be pointed on two sides.
Type II – Hub stakes shall be pointed on four sides or shall have a conical end. The pointed ends of the stakes shall have straight or curved sides.
The length of points measured along the stakes center line shall be 2 – 7/8 inches (73.0 mm) plus 1 inch (25.4 mm), minus 0. The difference in length between the sides shall be 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) or less. Points shall be within 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) either side of center. Slightly blunt points shall be acceptable.
2.5 Cross grain. Slope of grain shall not exceed in 1 inch (25.4 mm) in 4 inches (101.6 mm).
2.6 Workmanship. The wood stakes shall not have pitch pockets or wanes on the edges or ciorners greater than 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) in diameter. Splits shall not exceed the width of the face in which the split is located. Stakes shall be free from decay except decay confined knots. Pointed ends shall be free from burns, splinters, and tears. Type I stakes shall be free from loose knots and knots over 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) in diameter on the 3/4 inch (19.0 mm) side of the stake. Type II stakes shall be free from loose knots and knots over 3/4 inch (19.0 mm) on the 1 – 1/2 inch (38.1 mm) side.
2.7 Measurement system. The values atated in inch – pound inits are to be regarded as the standard. The metric values stated in parenthesesare for information purposes only.
2.8 Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions will be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch – pound units, providing they fall within the tolerances specified and all other requirements of this document are met. If a product is manufactured to metric dimensions and those dimensions exceed the tolerances specified in inch – pound units, a request should be made to the contracting officer to determine if the product is acceptable.
3. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph 23.403 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).
